This small kitchen feels spacious because of the vaulted ceilings that add volume and the abundant windows that wash the room in natural light. Natural clay plaster walls feel warm and cozy. The custom, alder cabinetry (with home-made stone pulls) were designed with extra-tall upper cabinets to take advantage of the vertical space for storage. The island is a working cutting board with storage below and doubles as a gathering place for quick meals and for guests. The French door leads out to an east-facing porch—the 3-season gathering place for morning coffee and family cook-outs.

Bamboo floors stretch from the kitchen into the dining and living rooms giving a feeling of continuity to the space. The Fisher & Paykel dish drawer to the right of the sink is extremely energy efficient. It sits just under the counter (a friend to your back), slides out like a drawer and is under 16" tall, leaving room for storage below.

A partial wall (off camera to the left of the frig) blocks the view of the refrigerator, stove and sink from the entry.
This wall clock is made from keepsake rocks glued directly to the clay finish on the wall. Notice the flecks of straw in the clay—a classic Southwestern touch.
