The south garage
wall was built flat, then erected here. Braces held it
in place until the other walls were built and erected
so they could be secured to each other. |

|
This is the west garage wall
going up. Not much wall because of the garage door.
Our normal Sunlight Homes Component Package includes a
frame garage since superinsulating the garage isn't a
high priority for most people. In our case, we decided
to put infloor radiant heat in our garage in case a future
owner decides to add on. |

|
We are using special garage
roof trusses that have a storage space built in. Since
the end trusses are built normally, it' difficult to see
that the rest of the trusses have an empty space in the
middle for storage. We're using a pull-down ladder to
access this garage storage. |
| |
The garage is sheathed in
OSB with a window and 2 skylights in the storage area
above. A window on the north side of the garage will give
us ventilation and help cool the garage heated by hot
cars in the summer. |
|

|
The east covered porch is being framed
on the east side. We plan to have a covered area under
the porch then an uncovered patio space beyond. Designing
this outdoor living space carefully will allow us to expand
our living area outside for most of the year. |
| |
We chose a shed roof on the
porch for our new Sunlight office. The French door and
south facing window will give the office a lot of day
lighting. |

|
Can you believe it? It snowed
and made for a beautiful, sparkling day over the weekend.
Of course all was gone and dry for the workmen on Monday.
The south garage roof (shown here) will have our PV panels
installed for solar electricity. |
 |
A view from the SE of the
east porch. This roof is fairly complicated and the footprint
of the home is also complex, which increases the cost
to build the home, but adds interest and allows for more
day lighting in all the rooms. This is a trade off which
you must choose for yourself; a more complex structure
or a more simple, less expensive one. |
