LLet's face it. We all have a lot of stuff. Some of us have more stuff some have less. Some of us collect stuff and others just save stuff. WE ARE SLAVES TO OUR STUFF!

Once you commit to building a small home, one of the first things you'll need to do is assess your stuff. Downscaling encourages us to look at our possessions in a new way. Which of them really enhance our lives? Building small forces you to clarify your ideas about what stuff is really important. The better you are at whittling down your stuff, the smaller your home will be. Are you committed? This exercise will give you the answer!

stuff assessment exercise

With pencil, paper, a tape measure and your partner in hand, begin at one end of your home and survey your stuff. Don't forget the attic, basement, storage shed and closets! On the first page, write down all of your "keepers," things that you absolutely will not part with. (Record their measurements for use during the design of your new home.) On the second page is the stuff that you can give away or sell. The final page is named "??" for things that need "further discussion."

Make time to discuss items on your ?? page and make some decisions. Bribery and barter can help. Other that that, we have no suggestions on how to come to agreement here. You're on your own!

This exercise will help you decide how far you can downsize. If you keep reminding yourselves of the benefits of living lightly, it will be less painful. Find the balance. You don't want to end up with a lot of regret; you DO want to pare down and lighten up!

Another important component to a sustainable home is the use of "green" materials. Follow the materials link to learn more.
